  • Shunna and Sao have over 20 years of combined nursing experience ranging from in inpatient nursing, case management, community health education, management and teaching at the collegiate level.

  • Observances along the way prompted them to explore ways to increase health literacy and self-advocacy in an underserved population of patients.

  • As a duo of culturally diverse nurses, they know patients need culturally diverse treatment.

  • Shunna and Sao started by completing baseline assessments of literacy level and language barriers that likely impacted treatment. In doing so, we learned that this sub-group needed culturally sensitive focused care and attention to not only navigate the health care system but to understand health-related information and interventions specific to their care.
